There are reliable scales that the government uses to measure psychic ability. The Psi Scale is perhaps the most widely used of these.
Every person and animal on the planet has his own capacity for psychic ability. Every person places somewhere on the Psi Scale for a particular psychic ability. This ability is called the Psi Quotient (PQ), and is measured in a way similar to that in which intelligence tests measure IQ.
To measure your pets PQ for a particular psychic ability, youll need a calculator, a pen or pencil, and a piece of paper.
Bear in mind that because there are many different types of psychic power, your pet may not possess all three of the psychic powers described in this book. Your pet may have a high PQ for clairvoyance, and still have a low PQ for telepathy.
This does not make your pet any less psychic.
When you are calculating your pets PQ for a specific power, remember to use only the test for that power in your calculations. Give your pet one of the tests described above. Write down the number of correct guesses your pet makes.
Then use this equation:
Psi Quotient = 1000 * (number of correct answers)*(number of correct answers) / 25.
So, for example, if you want to measure your pets PQ for clairvoyance, do the clairvoyance test described in chapter three of this book. Then, take your pets score, and square it, divide by twenty-five, then multiply by a thousand.
For example, imagine that my canine companion, Lassie, guesses 7 out of 25 cards correct. I would take her score, 7, and square it, which gives me 49.
Then, take that square, and divide it by 25. In Lassies case, I would divide 49 by 25. This gives me 1.96.
Finally, to get the PQ, take that number, and multiply it by 1000. For Lassie, I would take 1.96 and multiply it by 1000, giving her a PQ of 1960.
The PQ of any average person or pet is 1000. The higher your pets PQ, the more psychic power she possesses.

How reliable is the PQ? That depends on how many times you run the test. The more times you run the test, the more reliable your answer will be.
What happens if you get really different answers? If, for example, the first time you ran the telepathy test, your pet scored 3 out of 25, but the second time you ran the test, she scored 10 out of 25. Which do you use?
Actually, you have to use both for a real PQ score. Find the average of the two scores, and use the average number of correct scores when you calculate her PQ. (To find the average of two scores, add them together, then divide by two).
When one of the designers of Pet ESP Cards first tested himself for Clairvoyance, he found that his PQ was only 1030! This was only one test, however. After many, many more tests, and averaging all of his scores together, we now know his real PQ is 2250. One test cant really give you the whole picture. His co-researcher, on the other hand, scores under a thousand every time.
Keep in mind, of course, that your PQ can change with time. The effects of maturity and aging play a role here, as do practice and training. If you or your animal companions score under 1000 at first but your scores increase with time, you may be correct to ignore the early scores on the grounds that your psychic abilities have improved since the start of testing. You may want to keep a record of your older, lower scores so that you can track the development of your or your pets psychic development. This is akin to the records that a track coach keeps of an athletes finishing times and personal best finish time. You and your pets will also have your average PQs and your personal best performances.
Pay close attention to the circumstances under which your pets score particularly well or poorly. Are there any patterns? You may be able to maximize their abilities by moderating environmental factors such as temperature, nutrition and the presence of other animals.
If your pets PQ is not as high as you had hoped, do not despair. This guide includes an extended discussion of tricks and games for training psychic abilities. In time, your pet may be able to develop skills along the lines of Chris the Wonder Dog or the Guadalupe Cats. The tales of the abilities of these wondrous animals to read minds, find hidden objects and solve complicated problems astound scientists to this day.
